Snoop What Your Stuff Says About You

A provocative and witty look at how our private spaces--from boardroom to bedroom--reveal our personalities, whether we know it or not! Does what's on your desk reveal what's on your mind? Do those pictures on your walls tell true tales about you? And is your favorite outfit about to give you away? For the last ten years psychologist Sam Gosling has been studying how people project (and protect) their inner selves. By exploring our private worlds (desks, bedrooms, even our clothes and our cars), he shows not only how we showcase our personalities in unexpected--and unplanned--ways, but also how we create personality in the first place, communicate it others, and interpret the world around us. Gosling, one of the field's most innovative researchers, dispatches teams of scientific snoops to poke around dorm rooms and offices, to see what can be learned about people simply from looking at their stuff. What he has discovered is astonishing: when it comes to the most essential components of our personalities--from friendliness to flexibility--the things we own and the way we arrange them often say more about us than even our most intimate conversations. If you know what to look for, you can figure out how reliable a new boyfriend is by peeking into his medicine cabinet or whether an employee is committed to her job by analyzing her cubicle. Bottom line: The insights we gain can boost our understanding of ourselves and sharpen our perceptions of others. Packed with original research and fascinating stories, Snoop is a captivating guidebook to our not-so-secret lives.

Nice romantic comedy : The first time I saw this one, I thought Witherspoon's character was a little too unlikable for the lead in a romantic comedy, however, after watching the movie more than once I don't feel as much that way. This is a nice movie that still has a few surprises even though you kind of get the feeling you know where things are going. The one thing this movie is lacking that usually shows up in most romantic comedies is a seriously dumb moment in which the characters look goofy and completely unbelievable. That's a plus. The movie has fun with sterotypes about the south and big cities like New York without going too far over the line. It's definitely worth buying a copy of this movie for occasions when you want to watch a nice light movie.

    Between Heaven and Hell

    Description

Robert Wagner, Terry Moore, Broderick Crawford and Buddy Ebsen star in this absorbing drama about a young, self-centered recruit who comes of age during WWII. Sam Gifford (Wagner) is a successful cotton planter who treats his sharecroppers as if they were little more than farm machinery. But during combat in the Pacific, as he sees "quality" people crack, endures life under a sadistic officer (Crawford), and learns true friendship, from a "cropper" (Ebsen), Gifford slowly discovers theres more to a person than social class and good breeding.

A callow Southern aristocrat (the charismatically challenged Robert Wagner) acquires character and democratic values in the crucible of combat, via a laboriously complicated script that begins in the middle of things and then loads on explanatory flashbacks like a forklift. On "an island in the Pacific, 1945," the scion of a Tennessee cotton dynasty becomes not only comrade-in-arms but also friend to the sharecroppers he once scorned. Although the jungle island is crawling with Japanese snipers and patrols, the greatest danger comes from U.S. officers who are variously incompetent, "yellow," or--in the case of company commander Broderick Crawford--certifiably insane. Screenwriter Harry Brown wrote the World War II classic A Walk in the Sun 11 years earlier, but the characters here are a dull lot and the dialogue terminally flatfooted. However, director Richard Fleischer blocks his action scenes to take full advantage of the CinemaScope format. --Richard T. Jameson

A fine 50s war movie that seems like a transition between some of the Hollywood propaganda-ish material that came before and the more cynical military-themed fare of the 60s and 70s. Broderick Crawford is fantastic as the unhinged captain, Waco, (he taunts Robert Wagners character, calling him by his middle name, Francis, which makes me wonder if, decades later, Warren Oates character in "Stripes", Sgt. Hulka, delivers the line "Lighten up, Francis" as a screenwriters tribute. Sorry, thats just the way my mind works.) Buddy Ebsen, a few years away from becoming the iconic Uncle Jed Clampett, delivers a sly performance as Willie. Yeah, some say Robert Wagner was a bit wooden, but hes saddled with the role of rich jerk who learns a lesson from us poor people. To be honest, Robert Wagner has always looked like a rich jerk. Im sure hes a good guy. Back to the unhinged Capt. Waco, who talks about his imaginary wife and surrounds himself with strangely devoted young men in sleeveless shirts. Hmmm... Amazon might not like me saying this, but you can watch this movie for free on ...

Gifford (Robert Wagner) plays a Southern landowner who treats his croppers badly... His beautiful wife Jenny (Terry Moore) just saw a side of him she never saw before... Gifford argues that Jenny has just seen his business side... But Gifford only came to realize the error of his rude ways when he was called to active duty and put among the troops in the Pacific theater in World War II...

The film opens with Gifford reassigned to a company posted up in the hills, a very isolated area under the command of a fanatical and probably queer army captain called Waco (Broderick Crawford).

With brief flashbacks, we discover that Gifford holds a well-earned Silver Star but one day, his emotions became dominant and his self-control completely lost when he assaults an officer in combat nearly killing him...

The attempt of Gifford-- seen to get a little shaky in combat--to master danger as far as to walk right along with the enemy, or not to leave the island without saving a wounded pal, hit the core of what must have happened on battlefields in World War II...

Aside from a beachhead landing and a final battle with the Japanese, Fleishers film shockingly touches on the US officers martyred at the hands of Japanese snipers...

    A Thinking Mans War Movie
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
One thing I have learned about reviewing movies is to keep in mind the level of enjoyment experienced, relative to the film and the story it relates. There are numerous very enjoyable, very good films out there that are not remotely Oscar winners, or even artistic successes. This is one of them.

This is what I would call a "thinking mans war film," in that it involves much more than combat action sequences by the score. There are social and behavioral issues at play in this story that when combined, truly contribute to a very good film. Even the "flashbacks" have a way of breaking up the narration in positive ways, to include ones perception of others, based on "class" or position in society. The film sends a clear message that despite the fact we come from different strata of society, we are basically put together the same way. In this film, Robert Wagner undergoes a developmental process that will not only affect his performance on the battlefield, but as a "man" when he returns to the absolutely stunning Terry Moore at the wars end.

The casting for the film is excellent, from Wagner to Buddy Ebsen, Broderick Crawford, Moore, and the various soldiers portrayed. The battle scenes are quite good, and are focused more on individual qualities than on graphic battle sequences. While this may not be a Five Star production, it is well worth owning, and definitely earns Four Stars.

This is a good 50s era Cinemascope war film about a National Guardsmans harrowing experience after his "deep South" unit is mobilized in WWII, and sent into action during the Pacific campaign. Great cast, including Robert Wagner, Buddy Ebsen, and Broderick Crawford.

    Studio: Smithsonian
An elegant, completely updated edition of the landmark study of WashingtonÂ's lost architecture The publication of Capital Losses a quarter century ago created a clarion call for preservation action by documenting the wanton destruction of many architecturally and culturally significant buildings in the nationÂ's capital. In the decades since, rising public awareness and the passage of the Historic District and Historic Landmark Protection Act in 1978 have slowed the pace of thoughtless destruction. But as this completely new and updated edition of Capital Losses demonstrates, vigilance remains the watchword, especially as pressures for urban growth continue to intensify in historic neighborhoods. At once a visual delight, a fascinating social history, and an eloquent appeal for ongoing awareness, Capital Losses reveals the Washington that was and how it became what it is today. This updated edition includes eighteen more treasures lost and ninety additional historic photographs. The 270 buildings featured here represent a legacy forever gone, a cultural heritage destroyed in the name of "progress." A thoughtful introduction by noted architectural historian Richard Longstreth brings the preservation story up to the present.

"A lot has happened in the financial markets since 1992, when Peter Bernstein wrote his seminal Capital Ideas. Happily, Peter has taken up his facile pen again to describe these changes, a virtual revolution in the practice of investing that relies heavily on complex mathematics, derivatives, hedging, and hyperactive trading. This fine and eminently readable book is unlikely to be surpassed as the definitive chronicle of a truly historic era." - John C. Bogle, founder of The Vanguard Group and author, The Little Book of Common Sense Investing "Just as Dante could not have understood or survived the perils of the Inferno without Virgil to guide him, investors today need Peter Bernstein to help find their way across dark and shifting ground. No one alive understands Wall Street's intellectual history better, and that makes Bernstein our best and wisest guide to the future. He is the only person who could have written this book; thank goodness he did." - Jason Zweig, Investing Columnist, Money magazine "Another must-read from Peter Bernstein! This well-written and thought-provoking book provides valuable insights on how key finance theories have evolved from their ivory tower formulation to profitable application by portfolio managers. This book will certainly be read with keen interest by, and undoubtedly influence, a wide range of participants in international finance." - Dr. Mohamed A. El-Erian, President and CEO of Harvard Management Company, Deputy Treasurer of Harvard University, and member of the faculty of the Harvard Business School "Reading Capital Ideas Evolving is an experience not to be missed. Peter Bernstein's knowledge of the principal characters-the giants in the development of investment theory and practice-brings this subject to life." - Linda B. Strumpf, Vice President and Chief Investment Officer, The Ford Foundation "With great clarity, Peter Bernstein introduces us to the insights of investment giants, and explains how they transformed financial theory into portfolio practice. This is not just a tale of money and models; it is a fascinating and contemporary story about people and the power of their ideas." - Elroy Dimson, BGI Professor of Investment Management, London Business School "Capital Ideas Evolving provides us with a unique appreciation for the pervasive impact that the theory of modern finance has had on the development of our capital markets. Peter Bernstein once again has produced a masterpiece that is must reading for practitioners, educators and students of finance." - André F. Perold, Professor of Finance, Harvard Business School

Defending the West A Critique of Edward Saids Orientalism
    Binding: Hardcover
    Rating: 5.0
    Review: 7
    Studio: Prometheus Books
This is the first systematic critique of Edward Said's influential work, Orientalism, a book that for almost three decades has received wide acclaim, voluminous commentary, and translation into more than fifteen languages. SaidÂ's main thesis was that the Western image of the East was heavily biased by colonialist attitudes, racism, and more than two centuries of political exploitation. Although SaidÂ's critique was controversial, the impact of his ideas has been a pervasive rethinking of Western perceptions of Eastern cultures, plus a tendency to view all scholarship in Oriental Studies as tainted by considerations of power and prejudice. In this thorough reconsideration of SaidÂ's famous work, Ibn Warraq argues that SaidÂ's case against the West is seriously flawed. Warraq accuses Said of not only willfully misinterpreting the work of many scholars, but also of systematically misrepresenting Western civilization as a whole. With example after example, he shows that ever since the Greeks Western civilization has always had a strand in its very makeup that has accepted non-Westerners with open arms and has ever been open to foreign ideas. The author also criticizes Said for inadequate methodology, incoherent arguments, and a faulty historical understanding. He points out, not only SaidÂ's tendentious interpretations, but historical howlers that would make a sophomore blush. Warraq further looks at the destructive influence of Said's study on the history of Western painting, especially of the 19th century, and shows how, once again, the epigones of Said have succeeded in relegating thousands of first-class paintings to the lofts and storage rooms of major museums. An extended appendix reconsiders the value of 18th- and 19th-century Orientalist scholars and artists, whose work fell into disrepute as a result of SaidÂ's work.

The Twain original was an amusing, semi-satiric account of the author's Grand Tour of Europe and the Holy Land in 1867. Most of the humor derived from the contrast between the iconoclastic Twain and the tacked-on "reverence" of his fellow tourists. This brilliant exposition of the critique of identity is a classic in contemporary philosophy and one of Deleuze's most important works. Of fundamental importance to literary critics and philosophers,Difference and Repetition develops two central concepts--pure difference and complex repetition--and shows how the two concepts are related. While difference implies divergence and decentering, repetition is associated with displacement and disguising. Central in initiating the shift in French thought away from Hegel and Marx toward Nietzsche and Freud, Difference and Repetition moves deftly to establish a fundamental critique of Western metaphysics.

I like it so much that I bought a second copy to give a friend. Unlike other reviewers, I'm far less clear about why I like it and what I like about it, but I do know that it is a pleasure to look through it. Who would like this book? I am hesitant to guess. If you like outsider art, unique design, clothes that are unusual, to imagine and use your creative brain, then I suspect you'll find it a fun and inspiring book. If you are conservative in your mind and heart, you'll be bewildered by it. Or, maybe you'll get the jolt you need to see more in the world than you thought was there.

Djelimady Tounkara is only one of the memorable people you will meet in this dramatic narrative of life among the griot musicians of Mali. Born into families where music and the tradition of griot story-telling is a heritage and a privilege, Djelimady and his fellow griots -- both men and women -- live their lives at the intersection of ancient traditions and the modern entertainment industry. During the seven months he spent living and studying with Djelimady, Banning Eyre immersed himself in a world that will fascinate you as it did him. Eyre creates a range of unforgettable portraits. Some of the people who stride through his pages are internationally known, musicians like Salif Keita, Oumou Sangare, and Grammy winner Ali Farka Toure. But the lesser-known characters are equally fascinating: Adama Kouyate, Djelimady's dynamic wife; Moussa Kouyate, the Tounkara family's own griot; Yayi Kanoute, the flamboyant jelimuso (female griot) who failed to take America by storm; Foutanga Babani Sissoko, the mysterious millionaire who rebuilt an entire town and whose patronage is much sought after by the griots of Bamako. But the picture Eyre draws is not just a series of portraits. Out of their interactions comes a perceptive panorama of life in Mali in the late twentieth century. The narrative gives us a street-level view of the transformation of musical taste and social customs, the impact of technology and the pressures of poverty, at a crucial time in Mali's history. In individual after individual, family after family, we see the subtle conflicts of heritage and change. Even the complications of democracy -- with democracy, mango vendors think they can charge anything they want,Djelimady points out -- are woven into an unforgettable saga of one man, his family, his profession, and the world of Malian music.

A good insight : Although shorter than I had hoped, this film allows outsiders a brief and rare glimpse into Haitian Voudoun ceremonies and practices. Sadely Maya was not the person who finished and produced this film, but I think those who did, did so in a loving memory to her, and I think she would be pleased. This is a excellent follow up to reading her book, "Divine Horsemen."

damn good : A fine '50s war movie that seems like a transition between some of the Hollywood propaganda-ish material that came before and the more cynical military-themed fare of the '60s and '70s. Broderick Crawford is fantastic as the unhinged captain, Waco, (he taunts Robert Wagner's character, calling him by his middle name, Francis, which makes me wonder if, decades later, Warren Oates' character in "Stripes", Sgt. Hulka, delivers the line "Lighten up, Francis" as a screenwriter's tribute. Sorry, that's just the way my mind works.) Buddy Ebsen, a few years away from becoming the iconic Uncle Jed Clampett, delivers a sly performance as Willie. Yeah, some say Robert Wagner was a bit wooden, but he's saddled with the role of rich jerk who learns a lesson from us poor people. To be honest, Robert Wagner has always looked like a rich jerk. I'm sure he's a good guy. Back to the unhinged Capt. Waco, who talks about his imaginary wife and surrounds himself with strangely devoted young men in sleeveless shirts. Hmmm...
