I expected much better from James L. Brooks : I couldn't stand more than twenty minutes of this film. What has happened to James L. Brooks? He has created two of my favorite comedies (Real Life and Broadcast News) and possibly the best show ever on TV (The Simpsons), but this movie was awful. First of all, the script was hackneyed and the characters were one dimensional. I knew who each character was, and I could see the arc of the entire film, in ten minutes. Second, the directing was ham handed. The reactions shots were lengthy, obvious and terrible. Third, the acting was ATROCIOUS. I have never seen a person try as hard to act neurotic at Tea Leoni. Cloris Leachman as the mom was over-the-top wacky, and the "fun" moments suffered the fate of almost all "fun" moments in film: you could literally see the quotation marks around "fun." Everyone look at how much "fun" this is. See my smile? I'm having "fun". I'm really "letting myself go." Contrasting with this was Adam Sandler, who must have been asked to provide a counterbalance to the neurotic hilarity, so he had his entire face botoxed and got voice lessons from Ben Stein. Wooden. Hey, maybe this movie got really good after the first twenty minutes. If so, I would consider it a better comeback than Jesus on Pentecost.

Working with Cultural Differences Dealing Effectively with Diversity in the Workplace Contributions in Psychology
Binding: Hardcover
Rating: 5.0
Review: 4
Studio: Praeger Publishers
Given the internationalization of business, and the increasing need to work effectively with culturally diverse people in one's own country, people are facing new and more common challenges in developing workplace relationships. The challenges include communicating across differences in the use of silence and indirectness, dealing with negative exchanges, or neutral exchanges that one party perceives as negative, making decisions, working through criticisms and disagreements, and interpreting changing workplace dynamics. In this book, Distinguished Professor Richard Brislin shows us that helpful guidelines for everyday intercultural interactions are clear in information that has been gathered across the fields of cross-cultural psychology, organizational behavior and intercultural communication. A psychologist and a professor of management, Brislin uses actual examples he calls "critical incidents" to illustrate the basic psychological processes that play a part in effective, and ineffective, intercultural relationships across workplaces. The differences they face include individual and collective cultural background, the relative emphasis placed on the importance of status and power, behaviors relative to a culture's social norms, and gender expectations of males and females in the workplace. Insights explained here allow readers understand how they can benefit from, rather than be frustrated by, intercultural experiences, and how to better develop such relations. Short stories throughout the text demonstrate how actual people in business recognized and dealt with intercultural issues, at home and abroad.

Ile Aiye (The House Of Life) - A Film By David Byrne
Description
IL AIY is David Byrnes breathtaking 1989 documentary on Candombl, the African-influenced spirit cult of the Bahia region of Brazil.
IL AIY explores the ways in which Candombl has influenced the daily life and culture of the people of Brazil in music, art, religion, theater, food, dance, poetry and more. IL AIY uses experimental film techniques, music, and cultural observation to express the life and rituals of Candombl and the symbolic manifestation of the Orishs, the deities which represent the wide range of natural and spiritual forces. The rhythms of the sacred drums and bells, a dance of spiritual ecstasy, offerings and sacrifices, divination and the visitation of the Orishs through trance are all part of the color and life of Candombl.
Complemented by the original score from David Byrne recorded with Bahian musicians, the music in IL AIY includes ritual music recorded during ceremonies as well as popular Brazilian songs influenced by Candombl.

With the earthy, yet otherworldly Il Aiy (The House of Life), David Byrne (True Stories) explores the spirit cult of Candombl. Based in the Bahia region of Brazil, the African-originated religion permeates all aspects of the culture. Byrne incorporates music, dance, interviews, and clips from old black-and-white Brazilian movies into his documentary. Narration is kept to a minimum and the visuals do most of the talking--along with the rhythmic, trance-inducing songs, accompanied by translations of their evocative lyrics. As befits a former art student--and Talking Head--Byrne does get a little "arty" at times, as when he places screens within screens (much like Peter Greenaways Pillow Book). Fortunately, the effect isnt as distracting as it sounds and is only used sporadically. Il Aiy is a must for fans of Byrnes groundbreaking Brazil Classics, Vol. 1 compilation, on which Tropicalia legend Caetano Veloso sings the lovely number of the same name. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

To me, Kandomble represents one of the best ways to experience and share religious feeling - a spiritual path where the entire body celebrates through music, rhythm and trance. Clearly, Byrne has been hooked as well.
This DVD represents a collage of images, syncopations, sweaty bodies, images of saints and possessed old ladies, filmed and collated with affection and deep sympathy. At times I thought I glimpsed a sparseness in the spaces between the narrative and the image, a holding back from being swept from holding the camera into the dance frenzy, that sort of reminded me of Werner Herzog. Ile Aiyes narrative is removed out of the ordinary into a place which is neither here nor there. Some might attribute such an approach to lack of concern with craftsmanship, but Byrne pulls it off relatively well. This film makes me want to BE THERE, in Salvador de Bahia, moving together with those bodies that were designed to move and to worship, to celebrate the ecstasy of being filled with the force of life. The words themselves, Oshun, Yemaya, Exu, Xango, Omulu... dance away effortlessly from the tongue...
Well worth seeing.
Let yourself be possessed by the rhythm

I remember vaguely seeing this film on PBS back in the mid to late 80s when it first came out. Seeing it now, I obviously didnt remember much. This is a great, great documentary. You will learn about the religion of candomble, which is a blend of catholicism and African rituals in Bahia, Brazil. This was a big influence for David Byrne during the "Rei Momo" period(and probably continues to be). The rhythms and dances these people do are nothing short of the DNA of rock and roll. You will also learn more about what makes David Byrne tick. As an example, it suddenly makes perfect sense why he would choose Whitney Houstons "I just wanna dance with somebody" as a cover song in concert. Finally, I dare say, youll learn about life.

Cultural Differences Between the Military and Parent Society in Democratic Countries Volume 4 Conflict Management Peace Economics and Development
Binding: Hardcover
Studio: Elsevier Science
This book is a report of cross-national research on the civil-military cultural differences in democratic societies, particularly centred on the attitudes of national elites, here considered as being mainly composed of professionals. The research studies the question: What are the differences between the values, opinions and attitudes of military officers and those of professionals belonging to other categories? What is the effect of these differences on society in each country, and on the national security sector? What are the current trends of this gap?Researchers investigated a sample of cadets at military academies and their generational peers at civilian universities (future elites). An expert survey was also employed to sample present elites, both civilian and military. The report is divided into three parts: the first describes the methodological aspect of the research; the second part, taking a comparative international approach, analyses the results of the research with respect to the main survey themes; the third part continues the volume by examining specific national themes in the context of the results of the cross-national comparison developed in the preceding part. In a final chapter, the data of the expert survey has been compared with the data that emerged from the survey of future elites, to glean elements for a general summary and evaluation on the cultural gap.*The first cross-national research outside the U.S. on civil/ military cultural differences.*A significant comparison of the attitudes of present and future elites on security matter.*A deep understanding of national specificities of the 13 participating countries on the military issues

Within a few years the European Union will be enlarged from fifteen to twenty-eight member states, including Turkey. Cultural Overstretch investigates whether the new countries culturally fit into the European Union. Interpreting the European treaties and the European Law, Gerhards describes in a first step what he calls 'The value script of the European Union'. Using survey data from twenty-eight countries the author examines in a second step whether citizens support the value script of the European Union and whether there are significant differences between old and new member states and candidate countries. The book also highlights cultural differences by referring to modernization theory and forecasts in the concluding chapter the political consequences of a possible cultural overstretch of the European Union.

The Mexico Reader is a vivid introduction to muchos MéxicosÂthe many Mexicos, or the many varied histories and cultures that comprise contemporary Mexico. Unparalleled in scope and written for the traveler, student, and expert alike, the collection offers a comprehensive guide to the history and culture of MexicoÂincluding its difficult, uneven modernization; the ways the country has been profoundly shaped not only by Mexicans but also by those outside its borders; and the extraordinary economic, political, and ideological power of the Roman Catholic Church. The book looks at what underlies the chronic instability, violence, and economic turmoil that have characterized periods of MexicoÂ's history while it also celebrates the countryÂ's rich cultural heritage. A diverse collection of more than eighty selections, The Mexico Reader brings together poetry, folklore, fiction, polemics, photoessays, songs, political cartoons, memoirs, satire, and scholarly writing. Many pieces are by Mexicans, and a substantial number appear for the first time in English. Works by Octavio Paz and Carlos Fuentes are included along with pieces about such well-known figures as the larger-than-life revolutionary leaders Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata; there is also a comminiqué from a more recent rebel, Subcomandante Marcos. At the same time, the book highlights the perspectives of many othersÂindigenous peoples, women, politicians, patriots, artists, soldiers, rebels, priests, workers, peasants, foreign diplomats, and travelers. The Mexico Reader explores what it means to be Mexican, tracing the history of Mexico from pre-Columbian times through the countryÂ's epic revolution (1910Â17) to the present day. The materials relating to the latter half of the twentieth century focus on the contradictions and costs of postrevolutionary modernization, the rise of civil society, and the dynamic cross-cultural zone marked by the two thousand-mile Mexico-U.S. border. The editors have divided the book into several sections organized roughly in chronological order and have provided brief historical contexts for each section. They have also furnished a lengthy list of resources about Mexico, including websites and suggestions for further reading. Lively and insightful, The Mexico Reader will appeal to all interested in learning about MexicoÂaficionados, travelers and scholars.

On Longing Narratives of the Miniature the Gigantic the Souvenir the Collection
Binding: Paperback
Rating: 5.0
Review: 3
Studio: Duke University Press
Miniature books, eighteenth-century novels, Tom Thumb weddings, tall tales, and objects of tourism and nostalgia: this diverse group of cultural forms is the subject of On Longing, a fascinating analysis of the ways in which everyday objects are narrated to animate or realize certain versions of the world. Originally published in 1984 (Johns Hopkins University Press), and now available in paperback for the first time, this highly original book draws on insights from semiotics and from psychoanalytic, feminist, and marxist criticism. Addressing the relations of language to experience, the body to scale, and narratives to objects, Susan Stewart looks at the "miniature" as a metaphor for interiority and at the "gigantic" as an exaggeration of aspects of the exterior. In the final part of her essay Stewart examines the ways in which the "souvenir" and the "collection" are objects mediating experience in time and space.

Pathologies of Power Health Human Rights and the New War on the Poor California Series in Public Anthropology 4
Binding: Paperback
Rating: 4.5
Review: 21
Studio: University of California Press
Pathologies of Power uses harrowing stories of life-and death-in extreme situations to interrogate our understanding of human rights. Paul Farmer, a physician and anthropologist with twenty years of experience working in Haiti, Peru, and Russia, argues that promoting the social and economic rights of the world's poor is the most important human rights struggle of our times. With passionate eyewitness accounts from the prisons of Russia and the beleaguered villages of Haiti and Chiapas, this book links the lived experiences of individual victims to a broader analysis of structural violence. Farmer challenges conventional thinking within human rights circles and exposes the relationships between political and economic injustice, on one hand, and the suffering and illness of the powerless, on the other. Farmer shows that the same social forces that give rise to epidemic diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis also sculpt risk for human rights violations. He illustrates the ways that racism and gender inequality in the United States are embodied as disease and death. Yet this book is far from a hopeless inventory of abuse. Farmer's disturbing examples are linked to a guarded optimism that new medical and social technologies will develop in tandem with a more informed sense of social justice. Otherwise, he concludes, we will be guilty of managing social inequality rather than addressing structural violence. Farmer's urgent plea to think about human rights in the context of global public health and to consider critical issues of quality and access for the world's poor should be of fundamental concern to a world characterized by the bizarre proximity of surfeit and suffering.

Djelimady Tounkara is only one of the memorable people you will meet in this dramatic narrative of life among the griot musicians of Mali. Born into families where music and the tradition of griot story-telling is a heritage and a privilege, Djelimady and his fellow griots -- both men and women -- live their lives at the intersection of ancient traditions and the modern entertainment industry. During the seven months he spent living and studying with Djelimady, Banning Eyre immersed himself in a world that will fascinate you as it did him. Eyre creates a range of unforgettable portraits. Some of the people who stride through his pages are internationally known, musicians like Salif Keita, Oumou Sangare, and Grammy winner Ali Farka Toure. But the lesser-known characters are equally fascinating: Adama Kouyate, Djelimadys dynamic wife Moussa Kouyate, the Tounkara familys own griot Yayi Kanoute, the flamboyant jelimuso (female griot) who failed to take America by storm Foutanga Babani Sissoko, the mysterious millionaire who rebuilt an entire town and whose patronage is much sought after by the griots of Bamako. But the picture Eyre draws is not just a series of portraits. Out of their interactions comes a perceptive panorama of life in Mali in the late twentieth century. The narrative gives us a street-level view of the transformation of musical taste and social customs, the impact of technology and the pressures of poverty, at a crucial time in Malis history. In individual after individual, family after family, we see the subtle conflicts of heritage and change. Even the complications of democracy -- with democracy, mango vendors think they can charge anything they want,Djelimady points out -- are woven into an unforgettable saga of one man, his family, his profession, and the world of Malian music.

Customer Reviewsmusical biography/ travel writing at its best
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :2
Due to the low profile of African music in the States, this subject matter is so esoteric that any work on the subject would certainly be welcome. But thankfully, this is the work of a seasoned music journalist, whose charisma opens nearly every possible door to the life of Malis great musicians. The book starts as Eyre shows up unannounced to meet Djelimady Tounkara, perhaps Malis greatest living griot artists. As Eyre is taken under Djelimadys wing as an understudy, he finds opportunities to meet other great and colorful elements in Malis music world, including a musician who shunned his royal upbringing to a humble music life (Salif Keita), and a mysterious millionaire patron of the arts who worked his way up from humble roots (Babani Sissoko).
Throughout his study, Eyre remains humble, admitting that there is a whole host of young musicians in Mali half his age more advanced than he in this study. At one point he likens studying with Djelimady to "reaching into a rushing stream of water hoping to pull out a fish before it slithered away forever." Though Eyre is upfront about his preference to study music "stripped of its context," he doesnt skimp on highlighting the importance of politics, religion, and history surrounding the music.
His approach to viewing Africa is refreshing where international aid workers "looked around and saw sickness and suffering, good people held down by backwardness... I looked around and saw a cultural lodestone, musical diamonds and gold everywhere. I wanted the Malians to give me the hard lessons." Its hard not to agree with Eyres perception of Malis musical greatness in fact, in the 60s and 70s, the government mandated that the bands they subsidized all maintain deep roots to Malian tradition- unlike many other African countries, whose musical identities have been whitewashed by Western influences.
Of course Id recommend this book to anyone interested in studying African music, but it should also be compelling for anyone interested in a "cultural exchange" with the remote and exotic city of Bamako, Mali, which happens to not be all that far from Timbuktu.
Wake up and hear the music!

Banning Eyre has obviously spent a great deal of time loving and learning the music and culture of Mali. His book takes you straight to the heart of what the people and their music are all about. Effortlessly, he guides you on an excursion to this unique land. Youll taste the food, feel the heat and hear the music! In fact, you can hear the music in the companion CD. I love both the book and the CD!
V.S. Naipaul fans: you will love this book!

"In Griot Time" is a MAJOR travel literature event! Readers of V. S. Naipauls travel nonfiction will delight in this new book written by a former student of Naipaul, Banning Eyre of National Public Radio and Boston Phoenix fame. This astonishingly good book rivals and even surpasses Naipaul in the very areas Naipaul excels. Eyres writing recalls Naipauls best, with a fresh new vibrance, mature with a quiet, intelligent masculinity, reflecting Eyres years of magazine and newspaper work. The Canadian Eyre masterfully takes the best of his teachers legacy, then expands it, using his relative youth and considerable musical and literary skills to show us a fascinating view of travel and Malian culture not just as a writer, as an outsider, but also as a working musician and student of Malian styles, a view requiring a stamina and persona more reminiscent of Hemingway than Naipaul. Eyre is truly an exciting and important new voice in travel literature. NOT TO BE MISSED. Ive read and loved all of Naipauls books--and "In Griot Time" is even better if such a thing is possible! Thank you, Banning Eyre! Note: Im an old friend of the author, and have read his writing from his early teenage days on. He was good to begin with, and Ive watched him get better and better over the years. Im also a long-time fan of V.S. Naipauls works and consider him one of the great masters of 20th-century literature. Imagine my utter joy when I read "In Griot Time," and found Eyre has grown into everything Naipaul is and more! Now I can say "I knew him when..." :)

Customer ReviewsA good insight

Although shorter than I had hoped, this film allows outsiders a brief and rare glimpse into Haitian Voudoun ceremonies and practices. Sadely Maya was not the person who finished and produced this film, but I think those who did, did so in a loving memory to her, and I think she would be pleased. This is a excellent follow up to reading her book, "Divine Horsemen."
Excellent Footage of Voodoo
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :4
Often in the media, especially Hollywood, Voodoo is given a bad name. The people that conjure up these images have never experience being in another country or even do research on that particular subject. They get their information from people who are just as ignorant as they are.
About ten years ago I saw this film at the Smithsonian and was fascinated by the culture of Haiti. Haiti is negatively portrayed because they are connected to their African ancestry and being the first black nation to declare their independence from France, they have endured ignorance and cruelty from the outside world. Deren, being of Russian descent, visits the country knowing the people and their religious beliefs. The people of Haiti are connected to the spirit and nature, like their African ancestors. Although her life was cut short, this film is a classical documentary of Caribbean history and the black diaspora.
A film assembled from 20.000 feet shot by Maya Deren
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :47
"Divine Horsemen" is the name of Maya Derens monograph published in 1953, an account of the cosmology of Voudoun. The title was used by Teiji ( Mayas husband at the time of her death) and Cherel Ito in their assembled film made from Derens footage ( Deren by the way was born in Kiev in 1917 but lived in the USA from 1922 to her death in 1961). One of her largest frustrations was her inability to edit 20.000 feet of footage she shot in 1947, and 1949, 1954. This was primarily due to lack of funding and support from orthodox anthropologists where she was considered an encroacher on their revered territory. In a sense the Itos did editorial work for her after her death but it is important to recognize that this is not Derens. One does get a sense of her work with this video and what she tried to accomplish. The voice overs and animation are all the work of the Itos-- Derens own film was to use the sound she recorded in the field in Haiti and which she released as an album "The Voices of Haiti". The original footage is to be found at Anthology Film Archives in New York. This film shows the brilliance of Derens use of choreocinema in filming where she tried to respect the ceremonial logic of this beautiful religion.
Interesting early documentary, but lacks Derens touch
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
A fan of Maya Derens other films (At Land, Meshes of the Afternoon, etc.), I had hoped to find the same feel in this one. These earlier films (particularly Ritual in Transfigured Time and Meditation on Violence) had a definite rhythm and a strong relationship to dance (and choreography). Since Deren went to Haiti to study dance, among other things, I assumed that I would see an - perhaps the ultimate - expression of her homage to movement. While the footage is good and the film stands as an excellent early (?) exercise in documentary, Derens touch is missing, unfortunately. Bear in mind that this film was put together posthumously by Derens third husband Teiji Ito and his wife. Thus, the film is somewhat collaborative, showing the benefit of Derens eye, but not her editing. While it is an interesting film, if you are a Deren fan then I would suggest viewing it as a collaborative film, or perhaps an Ito film, rather than a Deren film.
One more side note, if you are upset seeing animals being slaughtered, there are a few scenes (relatively close together) where chickens, a goat, and a steer are mutilated and killed. Nothing too brutal, but still harsh enough.
"Around The Centerpost Beyond Good And Evil"
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :12
Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti is an incredible visual document chronicling authentic Haitian Voundoun practices as theyve never been viewed by the public-at-large before. Filmed between 47 and 51 by the legendary cult filmmaker and author Maya Deren who was an initiate into these religious practices, her involvement made it possible for her to gain access into its most intimate circles and record songs, rituals and festivals long hidden from the eyes of the unbeliever. The documentary is extraordinary in every way and of immense educational value to anyone in the fields of comparative religions, anthropology, ethnology, musicology or psychology. Divine Horsemen covers almost every conceivable aspect of the Voundoun experience:
1- Foundational beliefs and the background from which they sprang.
2- Clear explanations of the three Voundoun cults (Rada, Petro and Congo), their origins and the differences in their practices.
3- Voundoun cosmology, the Deities and their hierarchical positioning.
4- Discussion of the various symbols and signets used to express Voudoun concepts and the different engeries to be released the by Gods.
5- A close up and personal viewing of the rituals, festivals and songs utilized by the various cults to call upon the Deities and the process of possession.
6- Explanations of the various roles acted out by the practitioners and their societal standing.
Divine Horsemen is only 52 minutes in length but it packs a lot of information into its allotted time. Definitely not geared for an evening with the family, but certainly an undiscovered gem for those chosen few with an open mind and a receptive heart.
One of the essentials to any library dealing with the realm of the mystical. My Rating: -5 Stars-.

The Human Career Human Biological and Cultural Origins

Studio: University Of Chicago Press
Described as "by far the best book of its kind" (Henry McHenry, Evolution) and "the best introduction to the problems and data of modern palaeoanthropology yet published" (R. A. Foley, Antiquity), The Human Career has proved to be an indispensable tool in teaching human origins since its publication in 1989. This substantially revised edition retains Richard Klein's innovative approach and incorporates new findings from the past decade. The Human Career chronicles the evolution of people from the earliest primates through the emergence of fully modern humans within the past 200,000 years. Its comprehensive treatment stresses recent advances in knowledge, including, for example, ever more abundant evidence that fully modern humans originated in Africa and spread from there, replacing the Neanderthals in Europe and equally archaic people in Asia. With its coverage of both the fossil record and the archeological record over the 2.5 million years for which both are available, Klein emphasizes that human morphology and behavior evolved together. Throughout the text, Klein presents evidence for alternative points of view, but also does not hesitate to take a position. In addition to outlining the broad pattern of human evolution, The Human Career details the kinds of data that support this pattern, including information on archeological sites, artifacts, fossils, and methods for establishing dates in geological time. With abundant references and hundreds of illustrations, charts, and diagrams, this new edition is unparalleled in its usefulness for teaching human evolution.

Fifteen years after its first publication, The Second Shift remains just as important and relevant today as it did then. As the majority of women entered the workforce, sociologist and Berkeley professor Arlie Hochschild was one of the first to talk about what really happens in dual-career households. Many people were amazed to find that women still did the majority of childcare and housework even though they also worked outside the home. Now, in this updated edition with a new introduction from the author, we discover how much things have, or have not, changed for women today.

The Strange Career of Jim Crow

C. Vann Woodward, who died in 1999 at the age of 91, was America's most eminent Southern historian, the winner of a Pulitzer Prize for Mary Chestnut's Civil War and a Bancroft Prize for The Origins of the New South. Now, to honor his long and truly distinguished career, Oxford is pleased to publish this special commemorative edition of Woodward's most influential work, The Strange Career of Jim Crow. The Strange Career of Jim Crow is one of the great works of Southern history. Indeed, the book actually helped shape that history. Published in 1955, a year after the Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education ordered schools desegregated, Strange Career was cited so often to counter arguments for segregation that Martin Luther King, Jr. called it "the historical Bible of the civil rights movement." The book offers a clear and illuminating analysis of the history of Jim Crow laws, presenting evidence that segregation in the South dated only to the 1890s. Woodward convincingly shows that, even under slavery, the two races had not been divided as they were under the Jim Crow laws of the 1890s. In fact, during Reconstruction, there was considerable economic and political mixing of the races. The segregating of the races was a relative newcomer to the region. Hailed as one of the top 100 nonfiction works of the twentieth century, The Strange Career of Jim Crow has sold almost a million copies and remains, in the words of David Herbert Donald, "a landmark in the history of American race relations."
